Supracondylar femoral fracture or better known as distal femur fracture happens when the thigh bone breaks at the knee. The distal femur composes the top part of the knee joint. The lower part of the knee joint becomes the tibia. A distal fracture is a break in the femur where it forms the knee. Since the Femur is the strongest bone in the body, it takes a considerable impact or force to cause a fracture like a car accident or sport injury. Symptoms include but not limited to bruising, swelling, pain, shortened leg, inability to walk, crooked leg, displaced knee. Diagnosis is made via examination, history taking, x-ray. Treatment can range from casts/braces, skeletal traction to internal/external fixation in open fractures.
